What is a Walkability Score?

Use data to understand the best way to get around your prospective neighbourhood
Researching the walk score of a neighbourhood will save you time and energy when looking for a rental.

Many apartment dwellers are ditching their cars in favour of walking, biking or public transit and they want to know the best way to get around their neighbourhoods.

A walkability score provides just that by measuring the nearby amenities and the distance between them and your home. This number gives you a sense of how easy it is to run daily errands by foot before you commit to moving into a new place.

What Is It?

A walkability score is a number from 1 to 100, with 1 being the worst and 100 being the best. 0 to 24 means almost all errands need a car, 25 to 49 means most errands need a car, 50 to 69 means you can walk to some amenities, 70 to 89 shows you can do most things by walking, and 90 to 100 indicates you don’t need a car.

How Is It Calculated?

The distance between an address and its amenities determines a walkability score. A distance of 0.4 km (5 minutes) or less is most desirable, with further distances considerably less desirable as they get longer. Amenities further than a 30-minute walk don’t count toward a walkability score.

Other factors include the area’s population density, how long the blocks are, and the number of intersections.

Who Calculates It?

Launched in 2007, Walk Score is a company that calculates walkability in neighbourhoods around the world. They provide helpful information for renters, as well as real estate agents, journalists, and researchers.

What Are The Best Walkability Scores In Winnipeg?

According to Walk Score, Winnipeg is the 6th most walkable city in Canada. Winnipeg has an overall walkability score of 48, but many neighbourhoods fall well above that average.

Corydon and Crescentwood have a walkability score of 78, while Grant Park comes in at 81, and Osborne Village at 80. St. Boniface has a score of 73, and Wolseley is scored at 69. Other neighbourhoods near Downtown also have scores in the 80s and 90s.

Walkability scores are crucial information for renters because they not only add value to your home, but offer information about how you can live, work, and play within your neighbourhood.
